Training: Supporting children with Down Syndrome in education

This training course is for parent carers and professionals and will focus on supporting children with Down Syndrome aged 4-16 years in both mainstream and special schools. The training will be delivered by Helen Long (SENCO, Specialist Advisory Teacher for children with Down Syndrome, teacher, parent, and trainer).

The training will take place over the course of four days and there are options available for those who do not wish to attend all four days.

**DAY ONE: Friday 30th September, 9:30am - 2:30pm

1) Introduction to Down Syndrome: What is Down Syndrome? / Dispelling the myths, Building a picture of a pupil who has Down syndrome

2) Reading: How to teach reading and use it to support pupils with Down Syndrome across the curriculum

**DAY TWO: Friday 21st October, 9:30am - 2:30pm

1) Literacy

2) Accessing the curriculum: Planning, Strategies, Recording information

**DAY THREE: Friday 11th November, 9:30am - 2:30pm

1) Maths

**DAY FOUR: Friday 9th December, 9:30am - 2:30pm

1) Developing Positive Behaviour: Commonly occurring behaviours / Preventing unwanted behaviours / Increasing socially appropriate behaviours / social interaction (For this session, it would be useful to have your school's behaviour policy and any individualised policy or behaviour support plan in place for your pupil/child).

For each session, please bring your child's/ your pupil's IEPs/ ILPs (the document used to record individual targets / planned outcomes) and their EHCP, as well as any records/checklists you have/use.
